Why don't manufacturers calibrate their displays properly at the factory?
Manufacturers adjust their displays to standout in showrooms and to differentiate themselves from the competition. In doing so, viewing modes or "enhancements" are marketed that often do more bad than good. The fact that most people have never seen a display that adheres to system standards is an advantage as it allows them to continue misleading the consumer. Furthermore, different home theater systems may require different settings to present material accurately.
Is a professional calibration needed if I've already used a test disc?
Using a test disc is a great first step at improving a display's picture! We've written a DVE tutorial than can assist with this. However, many still find the process difficult or confusing. Most displays also have hidden parameters not available to the end-user that afford even more control. At Avical, we have the technical knowhow and testing equipment necessary to take advantage of this extended menu. So for those wanting maximum performance, a professional Avical calibration is their best option.
Will a professional calibration void my warranty?
A manufacturer cannot void a warranty unless they can prove that the adjustment(s) and/or modification(s) performed resulted in the malfunction of the unit. But it may be easier to simply not offer them that information.
Does Avical guarantee their work?
In the unlikely event that a display needs servicing within 30 days after being calibrated, Avical will perform a free* re-calibration. If an issue is found the day of the session resulting in rescheduling, Avical will be compensated $100.00 plus $50.00 for every hour traveled on top of any excessive toll or parking fees.
*Service documents needed and original traveling fees (if any) apply.
What sets Avical apart from the competition?
We come with almost 20 years combined experience in the field of video calibration during which time we've amassed hundreds of reviews/referrals on all types of displays. Our policy of only using reference grade instrumentation ensures the most precise readings. We're continually testing and evaluating products in our lab and in the field. And we treat our clients with the same courtesy with which we would like to be treated. In short, our reputation, experience, instrumentation, and customer service is what sets us apart.
What types of instrumentation does Avical employ?
During our calibration sessions, we employ the Photo Research PR-655 laboratory grade Spectroradiometer for taking measurements. Video test patterns are supplied via the Sencore VP-403C and/or the Accupel HDG-4000 generators as well as from Digital Video Essentials DVDs.
For product testing, we incorporate all of the equipment mentioned above, as well as but not limited to a Leader LV5152DA and Tektronix 1735HD HDTV waveform monitors, Minolta LS100 luminance meter, and a host of other equipment depending on the project.
How long will a calibration last?
All displays will drift from their calibrated state over time. How much and how quickly will vary on the type of display and how often it is used. Periodic touch-ups are therefore recommended to sustain the accuracy of the initial calibration. We suggest doing so every 1000 hours, which at 3-hours per day equates to about once a year. Re-calibrations are offered at $200.00 (plus traveling if originally charged).
Will I be left with different viewing modes?
A display is either calibrated properly or it isn't regardless of what or when it is being viewed. Modes such as Sports, Movie, Day, Night, etc. are created by manufacturers for marketing purposes. At Avical, we will create a reference setting for color (D6500) and in some cases a 5400K setting for B&W material.
When should I make an appointment?
Appointments should be made at least two weeks in advance to secure your preferred date. We also recommend that new displays go through a break-in period of 50-100 hours.
What forms of payment does Avical accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover via PayPal, and personal or business checks to reserve a calibration date. Balances are due in cash.
Does Avical offer any discounts?
A 10% discount applies if more than one calibration is performed in the same location during the same day. Subsequent calibrations of the same display are offered at a discounted rate as well. Any referrals that result in new customers will earn a $25.00 credit applicable towards the next calibration.
Does Avical offer audio calibrations?
While we do have a background in audio, we are currently devoting 100% of our resources towards the optimization of video systems.
How far is Avical willing to travel?
We are willing to drive up to 5 hours round-trip from downtown LA. Two hours of commuting will be at no charge (not including excessive tolls and/or parking) and then at a rate of $75/per hour additionally afterwords. People outside these areas can usually be serviced via our calibration tours which typically carry a $75.00 traveling fee per participant.
My location isn't listed in your tours. Can I still have Avical calibrate my display?
Mini-calibration tours can be arranged providing that participants are willing to cover our traveling time/fees. Please contact us for further details.
