"I recently had my Sony KDS-R60XBR2 HDTV calibrated by David Abrams as part of his tour through Arizona. David was very professional and was willing to go out of his way to answer all of my questions before, during, and after the calibration. Pre-calibration, I noticed the following: my primary colors were inaccurate (especially blue and green), a loss of detail in dark shadow scenes, and some video noise. After calibration, I noticed substantial performance gains in color accuracy, shadow detail, video noise, brightness (mine was too high), and contrast. In addition, some minor uniformity issues were address which I had not yet noticed but surely would have over time.

David went above and beyond by taking advantage of a feature of my set that allows me to more easily remember my default calibration settings in case I ever wanted to change anything (highly unlikely, of course, since it looks great!). In addition, my DVD player settings were optimized and this has made a nice different in terms of up-converted video. David also suggested that I purchase a back light from an independent company, which turns out to be about the best $50 that I could have spent to squeeze a little more benefit out of my system.

"During Avical’s December ’06 Northwest Calibration tour, David Abrams stopped by and calibrated my new Samsung HL-S6188 DLP display. Although I had owned my set for only a couple of months and was pleased with its overall performance, the possible enhanced viewing experience resulting from a professional calibration intrigued me. After all was said and done, I’m glad I took the plunge and had my display calibrated. My 6188 performs better then ever.

Out of the box, my HL-S6188 looked fine to me. However, after the first few days of viewing, I did start to notice some minor “annoyances.” Various colors seemed a bit unrealistic, the brightness of the display was overpowering at times, and SD broadcasts looked slightly blurry.

Once David completed his calibration, I immediately noticed a number of positive display changes.

First off, the blacks were noticeably blacker. Shadow detail was much improved. Secondly, the accuracy of the colors was far more realistic. No more “cartoonish” images. Thirdly, the picture quality of standard definition (SD) broadcasts increased nicely. The blurry SD images I use to see during my local evening news broadcasts are now mostly gone.

Another post-calibration benefit I’ve noticed is a 3-D effect on some HD broadcasts. The images seem to have more depth due to the improved contrast and color rendition. Also, HD-DVDs never looked so good when played through my Toshiba HD-A1. Nice.

Summing things up, the professional calibration of my display was money well spent. I enjoy the results every time I turn my HL-S6188 on.

"I had the pleasure to have David Abrams from Avical out to calibrate my 7178 approx a week ago. I wanted to acclimate myself a few days to get a real feel for the benefits.

Like many others, PQ is greatly improved…( I thought it looked good before ) the detail in the blacks is outstanding, colors and flesh tones are spot on…across the board. With a good HD source broadcast, the PQ is 3D like. Usual artifacts I frequently saw are minimized or gone completely. SD, which of course pales in comparison, is definitely acceptable now. Another thing is that in my area, PBS had always looked soft in comparison to other HD broadcasts, now 90% of the time it is crystal clear. (other 10% is just bad footage).

Dave calibrated and set up scan rates for all my inputs, and although I do not use all of them currently, I am really pleased they are ready to go when I am. Dave is a very nice guy, an experienced, total professional, informative and a pleasure to converse with whether it be technology or just movie talk, you will feel right at home and comfortable with your choice of having your set ISF calibrated. In my case, that may apply to others, I have not purchased an HD DVD or BR player as of yet (which was a concern for me at first) but Dave said when I do it would not be a problem as my 7178 is ready to go and he would assist me on setting the player up. Not only will you have absolutely knock out PQ, but a valuable resource if you have further questions or issues with your set. I do own an Oppo player which is now set up properly and the PQ is really outstanding.

In summary, if you buy a Baby Grand, it is a beautiful thing…….have it tuned properly…and your taken to a whole new level. ….If you are considering a calibration save your shekels and just do it, and by all means….have Avical do the job!"

Before the calibration I noticed a lot of banding on all modes except for movie mode, which tended to be a little dark and dingy. After Dave's calibration, I'm able to use any mode. "My Toshiba 62HM195, a 1080p DLP rear-projection display, looked so bad out of the box I thought it was going to burn holes in my corneas. Playing with the user-accessible settings, I dialed in a tolerable HD picture, but the 480 sources looked so bad I was afraid I’d never be able to watch Comedy Central or a movie on my DVD player again. Having already watched David Abrams calibrate a friend’s direct-view TV, I knew my next step was to call Avical.

I hope that, if I ever need major surgery, my surgeon is as methodical and meticulous as David. Although 1080p DLP sets were still a new phenomenon and my Toshiba had only been on the market a few months, he was completely prepared when he showed up at my house. Since I was curious about the calibration process, he patiently explained every step to me and answered every theoretical question I could throw at him. Two-thirds of the way through the calibration, we hit a glitch – his signal generator that produces 1080 test patterns wouldn’t synch with my display. Since not a single one of these signal generators had ever failed in the field, I was afraid my Toshiba was defective, and I immediately started having paranoid fantasies about having to call in one of their technicians. However, David calmed me down and promised to start researching the problem as soon as he got home. He also promised to come back the very next evening to finish the calibration.

I received an e-mail from him the following morning. He had already spent hours testing his signal generator and talking to its manufacturer. When he returned to my house, he had a signal generator borrowed from a colleague and completed the calibration without incident. I can’t overemphasize how thoroughly professional and reassuring he was during this brief period of uncertainty. My plumber or electrician would have left me hanging for a month or two. My doctors never call back with test results when they say they will. David solved the problem in 24 hours and kept me informed every step of the way. And, of course, the calibration itself was terrific. HD looks every bit as great as I dreamed it would, but the real bonus is that my 480 sources look good too. Until Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are ready for prime time, I can enjoy movies on my DVD player. And even Comedy Central via Direct TV looks decent.

I can’t recommend the calibration process and David himself highly enough. He’s worked for three other friends of mine with a variety of display types, and they’re all as happy with the results as I am."

"I was very pleased when David Abrams offered to move my calibration forward from September to July. He arrived exactly on-time and proceeded to methodically and in a very practiced manner gather the pre-calibration readings. He then expertly adjusted the display for all of the inputs. It was very clear that David had done this many times before and was very familiar with the Samsung HL-R6168W calibration requirements. He spent extra time troubleshooting a noisy signal that has been on the component inputs every since I got the set. Once he determined the problem was not on the HDMI input, I resolved to abandon the component inputs in favor of the HDMI. This part of the session was definitely appreciated since the blue sparkles in black backgrounds have been a very distracting problem for the past 2 years.

We’ve now had the weekend to view the results of David’s calibration work and are extremely pleased with the improvement in the accuracy of the images and detail of darker scenes. I have always been very pleased with the picture quality of the display but now feel the image is perfect, thanks to David."

"My 1.5 year old Samsung DLP television set was calibrated by Eliab of Avical. Prior to the video calibration the display looked good, but I was having problems with black levels and attaining shadow detail while maintaining a crisp level of black.

The television series '24' would drive me nuts with its dark scenes due to many episodes taking place during nighttime hours. My screen would either be crisply black with little or no shadow detail or it would be a lighter blotchy black, but would then display some shadow detail. I couldn't get the grayscale setup properly to save my life.

After the calibration I was able to view '24' and watch it the way that the show's producers intended it to be seen. The blacks were spot on and very crisp while still yielding the elusive shadow detail that I had been chasing for over a year. On a side note, Eliab is very friendly as I battered him with a barrage of questions which he all patiently answered."

"I recently had my new Samsung HLS-5687W calibrated by Eliab during his Denver tour and I’ve been trying to come up with the one word to describe to the whole experience and outcome. Well, that word would have to be “perfect”. From our early correspondence to the final demo of the TV, Eliab was a consummate professional with an “above and beyond” type of customer service that’s just not found much anymore these days. He was prompt to reply to me emails, very courteous, extremely knowledgeable and more than willing to share his knowledge. Eliab explained the whole process as he went along. I learned more about my TV than I ever thought possible. After the calibration, we demoed some HD-DVD’s and I was floored. The black levels he achieved on my display have never been seen by my eyes before. I never knew there could be such detail in the black!

I could go on for pages detailing this beautiful new image I now have on my TV, however, I would still not be able to do it justice. It must truly be seen to be believed.

If you are new to the idea of professional calibration and riding the fence as to whether or not have one performed, let me be the first to say “don’t hesitate, you won’t regret it one bit!”. That being said though, if you want your TV calibrated to its highest potential, there can be only one choice. Avical. I can honestly say that Eliab will now be calibrating every new TV I get from now going forward."

"I just wanted to let everyone know that Eliab was here last night to calibrate my set. To anyone who is on the fence about calibration, this service is well worth it and Eliab appears to be one of, if not the best ISF calibrationist (at least when it comes to Samsungs). The colors on my set are now perfectly set to ISF standards. You can really tell the difference in the accuracy of subtle colors like light yellows and greens. Blacks have more detail and for me, most important of all skin tones are right on, no pinkish tint or yellowish hue (unless they are really that color). Very nice picture. After he left my wife called me from the other room to show me a field of yellow flowers on discovery HD. The colors were just so realistic and the picture so sharp that it really popped out."

"I'm a HUGE movie fan, wanting to watch films on a big screen I gave in and purchased a 57" Samsung DLP set. I did some research on the set and found that out of the box, it wasn't actually reproducing an accurate picture. To me that means I'm not seeing my films as the director had intened. I tried some of the calibration DVDs and found I could not tweak the set to the standards I needed. I had also learned about some of the "picture improving" problems in the set. As the madness settled in I found my way to the Avical sight...salvation.

In a short time I was in contact with Eliab. He was incredibly helpful via email, this was before I even had him out to work on my set. That spoke volumes to me, so I got him out here to work on my set. His level of professionalism and knowledge was off the charts. He explained what he was doing as he went through it, great for a blossoming videophile such as myself. From start to finish the experience was fantastic and when I played the first DVD after the calibration I nearly passed out. The difference was night and day...the picture was incredible. I highly recommend Avical.

Just to let you all know my girlfriend could care less about things like this. When she arrived after the calibration I sat her down to show her a movie. I pretty much thought she wouldn't say anything at all, as I said she doesn't really care about the A/V end of things. About 5 minutes into the movie she looked at me and said she couldn't believe how awesome the picture looked. To this day she would rather watch the TV than going to the movies, she thinks the picture looks better! "After experiencing the eye popping improvement moving from standard def to high def, it’s hard to believe that some tweaking on a high def set could create a noticeable improvement. But, BELIEVE it. The blacks are blacker, the flesh tones are more accurate, the contrast is broader, the picture from an HD DVD player has an almost 3D quality. The best way to illustrate the results of Eliab’s handy-work is by a quick anecdote: My neighbors who bought the same TV I have came over for dinner. The TV happened to be on when they arrived. "I had purchased a Samsung HLS-7178 in December of 2006. I was very impressed by the picture quality of the set but was very intrigued by all the posts I had seen on the AVS Forums lauding the virtues of professional calibration. Many of the posts gave glowing reviews to a company by the name of Avical. I sent an e-mail to them and received a very nice reply from Eliab. Eliab answered all of my questions and explained the calibration process in some detail. I was scheduled to be calibrated on Eliab's February 2007 Florida tour. A minor problem with my TV resulted in my having to cancel the appointment. Eliab was very nice and understanding about it and agreed to apply my deposit to a future tour.

Eliab's partner David Abrams made the September Florida tour. David was very friendly and knowledgeable and had a great passion for the business. He actually was able to come early for his appointment (unheard of here in Florida) as he was running ahead of schedule. David spent four hours calibrating my set, all the time explaining what he was doing and giving me interesting insight into the business.

After the calibration kicked in the results were astounding. The HD transmissions appeared almost 3D. The colors were deeper, richer and true to life. The blacks were truly black. The HD picture was amazing. The SD picture was almost HD in quality and appearance. The typical SD blurriness was gone. The picture just seemed an accurate true to life presentation. Even after a calibration you can still tweak your user settings for different programming if necessary.

If you truly appreciate the home theater experience a professional calibration is a very worthwhile investment. Like most other things in life, you get what you pay for. From what I have read all calibration services are not created equal. Avical did a phenomenal job and are truly consummate professionals. I cannot recommend them highly enough. If you are on the fence about getting calibration services from these guys make the jump immediately! You will not regret it!"

"I tried all those calibration DVDs, but without the proper measurement devices you only get near enough to the ballpark to see it, you don't get in it. I did a lot of research before choosing someone to adjust my baby. Sure there were other local calibrators, some highly recommended, but none that had as many accolades as I have seen for Eliab.

I patiently awaited his visit to Atlanta and arranged to have him do the initial calibration on my Hitachi 57 inch RPTV. Well I was not disappointed!! Watching Eliab at work is like watching a master craftsman or an artist finesse their masterpiece to perfection. I first heard of Eliab after reading an extensive amount of information about Samsung DLP’s on AVSForum about a year ago. The first thing I noticed when I watched HD content after the calibration was that the picture had something of a 3-D quality to it. Eliab also made some great suggestions for better room lighting by using an ambient back light behind the TV (which I have on order), getting a better DVD player since my existing player was not up to par with the rest of my system (I am swapping out my existing player for a Toshiba HD-A2), and gave me some settings to change each time I do critical viewing (overscan and 1:1 pixel mapping). Eliab also offered to assist me with the brightness and contrast settings of my new DVD player once I get it set up. "I recently purchased a Samsung HLS7178 DLP after doing research on the AVS forum. During the course of my research, I noticed that many people recommended the services of Avical to get 100% performance from their sets. While it sounded interesting, I figured I would spend some time tweaking the settings myself to see if I could improve my picture. While I was able to make some improvements, and the picture was probably acceptable to most folks, I always felt like *something* was lacking. Blues, reds, and other colors would literally scream off the screen during certain programs, and would immediately pull me out of the viewing experience. And then I would notice how my blacks were more ... well, gray. And how I could never quite get the contrast right to make everything look "real". Eventually, it was enough for me to say "I'll try a calibration at least once, and if I'm not happy with it I'll at least know I'm not missing anything."

Once Eliab finished with my set, it was clear that I had been missing a lot.

During the course of our three-hour session, Eliab brought my display from "acceptable to most" to "reference-able to everyone". It was not just what Eliab did to the set, but also how he went about doing it. While he certainly could have plowed through the various service menus to make the necessary changes and then move on to the next client, he instead took time to explain each and every important change that was being made to my set. Even if we were in conversation about something entirely off-topic while he was working, he would break in to point out a specific tweak that was being made to make sure I understood what was being done, and why, and how it would enhance my viewing experience. He explained what equipment was being used, and why it was the best possible equipment available to calibrate my set. Aside from the software calibrations being made in my service menu, he also made physical adjustments to my lens focus (which was way off) and helped me to stabilize the entire unit by removing the flimsy base on my set.

And the results? Phenomenal to say the least. Movies that I have considered to be lifelong favorites ... it's as if I had never really seen them before. I spent a good five hours after Eliab left watching Star Wars, King Kong, and pretty much any other HD content I could get my hands on. The blacks on the screen are truly black, and not washed out as they had been before. Colors look REAL; I cannot stress enough how much of a difference having the color tuned accurately can make. Instead of exploding off the screen, colors are inviting, rich, and truly realistic. Background noise that had appeared on almost all programming is quite simply gone. Fine details that were not so clear before are now as plain as day. And my worries that the calibration would make the picture too dark was completely unfounded, as the picture is bright and incredibly accurate.

I spent a lot of time on the fence about getting this set calibrated, and unfortunately that's viewing time I'll never get back! I would recommend Eliab to anyone who is looking to get 100% performance from their set, and would be happy to spend time convincing anyone on the fence that this is an absolutely worthwhile investment."

"Eliab was at my home a few nights ago to calibrate my Samsung HL-S7178W. The results were definitely worth the cost of the calibration. This is my third HD-TV and the first set to be calibrated. I have a 3 year old, 50” Samsung DLP that I always thought looked great, but I always had the feeling that maybe, if the set was calibrated I would enjoy a better viewing experience. I always had the mode set to Dynamic or Standard thinking that bright was the way to go. Boy, was I wrong! While searching the AVS forum back in January when I was trying to make a decision between the Samsung HL-S7178W and the 70” Sony XBR2, I kept seeing Avical’s name show up with glowing references in regards to calibrating Samsung DLP’s. That made it easier for me to chose the Samsung over the Sony.

After a couple of days of watching the TV with my own tweaking (not in the Service Menu) I decided to use Eliab’s settings for the User Menu. At first, I found the picture to be a lot darker than I was used to, but after awhile I really began to see the difference in the picture – the blacks looked deeper and more detailed, the color looked more natural and the picture was easier on my eyes than before. At that point, I figured if these tweaks could make this kind of difference, what would a professional calibration do for this TV?

I will tell you that when Eliab calibrates your set, you are getting more than your money’s worth. My wife and I watched him work his magic as he explained the changes he was making in the Service Menu. He was very personable and had no problem answering our questions. He even offered to remove the base from the TV which now makes the TV blend in seamlessly with the TR-71B stand. Eliab spent 3.5 hours at my home. He calibrated the HDMI, Component and S-Video inputs. He tested my Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player, my Denon 987 Receiver and the Motorola 6416 DVR cable box. After Elib was done, I can honestly say that the blacks were definitely deeper and the picture detail has definitely improved to the point that I could see the white stitching on a white collar. The color is much more realistic looking and the SD picture has definitely improved. The calibration helped to remove 90% of the animated look that we were seeing on the faces when a 4:3 SD commercial was on the local ABC-HDTV channel which used to be very annoying – mainly because I thought there might be something wrong with set.

If you really want to enjoy your viewing experience, you should definitely get your set calibrated. You’ve already spent a lot of money on your set, so go the extra mile and have your TV calibrated. If you want the peace of mind that your new investment is operating at peak efficiency, I highly recommend Eliab for the job."

"The calibration of my HLS5087W by Eliab went as planned and without a hitch. Eliab drove quite a distance out of his way to reach my mid Michigan location and I was very grateful for that. After darkening my room, Eliab proceeded with speed and accuracy with the calibration. It not only takes the proper equipment, but the vast knowledge of the calibrator to do this properly; Avical and Eliab meet this criteria. Eliab explained everything as he went along, but with my aging brain cells most of it went in one ear and out the other. The end result, which takes a few days if not weeks to adjust to, is truly amazing. One of the first guests in my home to view the post calibration of my set asked if the picture was being presented in 3D. The normal statements apply, amazing colors, true black and whites, great depth to the picture, etc.. Prior to calibration I blamed this on the network and or cable company; but it seems to have been the lack of proper calibration of the Samsung.

After having enjoyed the fruits of a calibrated 5087 for two years, I didn't think my viewing experience could get much better. Wrong. It is truly amazing how much better this LCD TV looks when properly calibrated. "I first heard of Avical’s services in the spring of 2004 when reading various posts by Eliab in the tweaks section on the Home Theater Spot forums for my Toshiba 42H83 RPTV. After following various tutorials posted by Eliab regarding my 42H83 (mechanical focus, electrostatic focus, geometry, and convergence), I decided that I would take the plunge and pay to get my next set calibrated (Samsung HL-R5668W). Before scheduling an appointment, I decided to squeeze every ounce of performance out of my set that could be attained without the aid of special equipment or the eye and knowledge of a professional calibrator. With that said, by following tutorials posted by Eliab on various forums (ring focus and velux specifically) I was able to make considerable improvements in my display’s performance. I started to doubt if it would be necessary to pay for a calibration after performing the aforementioned tweaks; however, various testimonials on various forums convinced me that a professional calibration was necessary in order to maximize performance.

I had Eliab calibrate my HL-R5668W during his Detroit vicinity tour April of this year. There is no question that I had my doubts if the calibration would pay off… BOY was I wrong to ever doubt Eliab! He further improved the ring focus that I performed and after a solid three hours of meticulously tweaking various service menu parameters it was time to watch some HD content. The first thing I noticed was how skin tones looked MUCH more natural and how detail level in dark scenes was greatly improved. The picture now has a dynamic pop that I had never experienced; this was consistent on various sources and was especially evident on video footage that I was most familiar with from my DVR. Eliab’s professionalism was top-notch and explained every aspect of the calibration in full detail. Both my father and I were so happy with Eliab’s services that we decided to have him calibrate our new Samsung HL-S6187W that was in a different room.

Similarly to the calibration of my HL-R5668W, Eliab was a true professional and spent over five hours perfecting the set… Keep in mind that this was after driving from New Jersey directly to my house which is 30 minutes outside of Detroit… I don’t know of many people who have the patience to perform such services after driving 10 hours or so. I would say that the results were even more impressive than my HL-R5668W (the HL-S6187W looked pretty atrocious out of the box to me); the set’s performance now exceeds my HL-R5668W which I thought would be pretty hard to accomplish. "I had my HL-S6187W calibrated by David Abrams in mid-July. I wanted to wait for awhile before posting a review so that I had the chance to view a wide variety of source material. First, David was very helpful and responsive to all of my questions before, during and after the calibration. He was patient enough to explain the calibration process in great detail. David is a true video and home theatre enthusiast, which comes out in the quality of his work.

The difference in picture quality pre and post-calibration is nothing short of jaw dropping. I could barely stand to watch SD content in the past, but now its much more tolerable. But who gets a 1080p set calibrated for SD? HD sources are amazing. Colors are spot on throughout the spectrum, and shadow detail is much richer than before. I have all the calibration discs and spent quite a lot of time tweaking items in both the user and service menus, and nothing I did can even touch David's efforts. Further, I made a point of not telling any of my friends or family about the calibration in an effort to gauge how obvious the results were to the untrained eye. Everyone who's seen the set after calibration quickly commented on how lifelike and "3D" the picture looked.

"I had been thinking of doing a professional ISF calibration of my Toshiba 57HX81 and my newer Panasonic AE500 front projector but thought I could at least come close doing it myself with Digital Video Essentials. The wife even noticed.

"I first 'met' Eliab on the AVS Forum when I was in the process of trying to decide between purchasing a Samsung DLP and a Sony SXRD. Many of the regular posters on the forum spoke favorably of Avical and their work but I was most impressed with Eliab's willingness to share his knowledge and expertise with others. He had written several posts to help new Samsung DLP owners get an acceptable picture out of the box and even gave advice to those using a DVE disc in lieu of paying for a calibration.

And then came the day that I read that Eliab's personal set was a Samsung 1080p DLP and that was the clincher. In my case the price difference between the Samsung and the Sony would easily pay for a calibration with money left over and that was that.

I felt that Eliab's experience and equipment made him the top choice for that series of set and perhaps others. I must admit that it was a good feeling to know that the guy working on your set actually owned one just like it! Standard definition programming actually showed the biggest improvement and analog cable, while not HD by any means, is now enjoyable to watch. Overall the black level seems more accurate and colors more vibrant. I am very pleased with the results and the choices that I made as I now enjoy viewing without the need to constantly readjust. And it's always gratifying when someone notices your TV and asks "What kind of TV is THAT?"

"I entered the HDTV world in the fall of 2003. Got my HD-ready TV, HD receiver and an off air antenna... Great results! Loved to watch the few things that were available back then! And as I started going to the Forums, I learned about the next logical step: Professional Calibration... Dug into it a bit more and contacted Eliab. We immediately planned a tour to South Florida (I lived in Boca Raton at the time) in December/2003. Since I met Eliab he showed a lot of class. He set up expectations right away (regarding time, results, etc.) and as he got started, explained everything he was doing as well as what each piece of his equipment was being used for. That was super cool stuff! What I liked the most was when he played a DVD (pre-calibration... I think it was Bandits) and paused on a scene where a guy was sitting in a Bar and you could see a window in his background. The window looked kind of foggy, but you'd never know as it appeared not to be part of the movie. Frankly, I would not have even noticed, had he not mentioned it! Well, he performed his magic (as it was the first calibration, it took a few hours) and after he was done he played the DVD again and went to the same scene. Voila! It turned out that there was a guy sitting in a car that (now) you could CLEARLY see THROUGH the formerly 'fogged' window!!! It was amazing... and made me wonder just how much of what the movie Directors want to show us we are actually missing!

My story has a second part. I moved to Charlotte, NC and after settling in, contacted Eliab to do a second calibration on the same set (I was concerned that with the move there may have been some movement of the lenses and in any case, it was about 1.5 - 2 years after the first one so I thought it was a good time for a tune up!). He fit me into a tour that he started in Washington DC and went through towns in VA, NC and GA. It sounded grueling, but he showed up on time, and produced great results. He got new equipment that seemed to enable him to do even better magic this time! And in less time.

Now, I am looking forward to having him around soon to write the third chapter of the story. I am getting ready to 'graduate' to a Front Projector and I'm sure Eliab's magic will work even better on one of those! If anybody asks me, I do recommend Eliab 150%. No hesitation. And I always emphasize the fact that his work is worth EVERY penny!!! On the personal side, he is a pleasure to be with. As said above, he walks you through what he is doing, why, with what... and as a bonus, has great musical taste and very interesting conversation!"

"First, I will say that it's hard to justify the cost of calibration until you've seen a properly calibrated TV in person. It's even harder to explain the benefits of a calibrated TV. I've read descriptions from owners who have tried to explain the before and after, but nothing prepared me for what a calibrated DLP can do.

Eliab has said that the the Samsung HL-S DLP series can come extremely close to SMPTE standards after calibration. Out of the box, I found it was too bright and "sparkly". It would give me minor headaches, and I was always reminded of the fact that I was watching a DLP. But after he was done with it, it is now performing at a level I did not think possible. I no longer feel like I'm watching a DLP, and the brightness and "sparkliness" have been tamed.

I will say again nothing will prepare you for a calibrated Samsung DLP. The closest comparison I can make is HD-DVD on the Samsung. The rich, creamy colors and film-like picture are reminiscent of watching a movie at the theater. On HD broadcast, the experience is much more enjoyable. The picture is balanced, crisp, with absolutely less noise than before. The shading, nuance, and detail are amazing. On certain programming the picture is luscious. If you're planning to watch your DLP for longer periods of time, a calibration is absolutely necessary to reduce viewer fatigue.

Again, it's nearly impossible to explain the benefits of calibration. It's one of the things you have to see in person, and you don't what you're missing until you know what you're missing. I will say that if calibrating a Samsung 5088 series DLP gets you within the boundaries of a 25K reference system, then the cost is a relative bargain."

"When I started reading on the AVS message boards about people’s successful calibration stories on their Samsung DLPs, something else caught my eye. “Eliab did a wonderful job” “Thank you Eliab, my TV looks great” and so on. So I figured I’d look more into this Eliab guy. After talking with him for almost 30-45 minutes on the phone, I felt like I knew the guy my entire life. I knew I had to get him out to my house as soon as possible after I picked up the TV.

When he arrived, he brought his equipment in, I felt like I was going to be on a movie set. I never knew such equipment existed! Even before he started, he sat down with me and went over everything he was going to do, explained to me more about DLPs, and why Samsungs are so good. I love learning anything and everything about TVs and he didn’t mind teaching me some. He wrote everything down as he was going along and at the end, gave me a copy of pre and post-calibration numbers. He made sure my TV, Cable Box, HD-DVD Player, Receiver, and Xbox 360 were all hooked up properly. Let me just say after he put in Training Day on HD DVD, I was speechless. I was so amazed at the clarity, the colors, how detailed the picture looked, that I was truly at a loss for words. Even SD cable looks much better.

In the end, if you're thinking about getting your TV calibrated, don’t hesitate. I don’t think I could trust anyone else calibrating my TV. The last thing to remember is that Eliab calibrates any kind of TV. It doesn’t matter if it’s a DLP, Plasma, LCD or whatever your taste might be.

As I had suspected - I had my tv dialed in pretty well prior to Eliab's visit - but his expertise helped to eek out that last bit of fidelity I've been looking for in my 940. The blacks are much better now than before (I had a slight crush) and he discovered a slight green push that I hadn't even noticed before and corrected it - not to mention the numerous other little things I totally missed that he fixed.

All in all I'd highly recommend Eliab's service if you want to be absolutely sure you're getting every bit of quality your display is capable of. I very much enjoyed his visit and will definitely use him again if I get another display."

"When I bought my first HDTV (Toshiba 50H82) a few years ago, I was persuaded by a friend to have the set professionally calibrated. Out of the box, I thought the picture looked great, so I was on the fence on having it done. However, being the geek that I am, I decided to give Eliab a call and schedule a calibration.

Eliab walked me through every single step that he took, explaining what he was doing and why he was doing it along the way. Just listening to some of the stuff he was saying, it was clear to me that his knowledge and expertise in the field is second to none. Not only that, but he's a fun guy to talk to in general while the calibration is being done!

Long story short, the picture of that set was un-be-lievable when he was finished. It was literally night and day. Since then, I've upgraded to a newer model, a 51H83, which Eliab has also calibrated. I'd also like to note that, after a service technician's blunder, Eliab first corrected the VR trimpots on my set and after he finished, the grayscale - to my amazement - was corrected. "I first learned of Eliab's services several years ago while researching my home theater "upgrade" through the AVS and Home Theater Spot Forums. At that time, I had no idea calibration services such as his even existed. Even though back in those days I had a 7 year old 4x3 Hitachi 50" SD RPTV, I decided to see for myself what a professional calibration was all about.

The improvement to the PQ on my trusty, but "ancient" Hitachi was startling, but what was even more impressive was the attention to detail that Eliab showed. He literally worked through the night on my rather "stubborn" display until he was satisfied with the results. He was patient, gracious, informative, and I have grown to consider him the Jedi Master of displays! He took his time and answered every question I had, and explained every step of the process. In a subsequent touch up a year later, he convinced me that Samsung DLP was the way to go for my future display upgrade.

When I finally purchased my Samsung HL-P5674 last spring, I had already had an appointment scheduled with him. Once again, the attention to detail was nothing short of phenomenal. Last fall, having learned through his website that he had developed a way to further tweak the Samsung contrast ratio via his Velux/foam-core panels I became intrigued and scheduled a touch up session. As luck would have it, my display posed a different internal set up, and he had to completely customize the process. Once again, he stayed literally into the wee hours of the morning until he was satisfied and results are outstanding.

I have contacted Eliab on occasional via email when I had questions on my Oppo DVD setup. He graciously walked me through certain steps via DVE that I needed to satisfy my somewhat inquisitive nature as well.

I mention the attention to detail, and the professionalism from Avical because a display calibration is a mystery to most people. Out of the box PQ is fine for some viewers, yet to others close enough is simply just not good enough.

If you appreciate having your AV equipment performing to it's fullest potential, then an Avical calibration is a no brainer. When you consider the over all cost of your equipment, the calibration is really one of the most affordable parts of a home theater. I consider Eliab not only a master technician, but an artist who can help me enjoy the work of other visual artists, directors, etc., though the use of my calibrated system. It is only through a calibrated display that you are able to see the picture as it was meant to be seen."
